In the early 20th century, after fighting with the Allies as a Chasseur Alpin on the Dolomite front, Romano De Cesco left his home region of Friuli in Italy to take his first job in bluestone mining in Quenast in the Walloon Brabant region. Born to a family of entrepreneurs, he later joined a building company in Brussels and climbed up the ranks of management.
In the late 1920s, he officially created the DE CESCO companies in Schaerbeek, at the address now occupied by the company’s headquarters.
The company gradually focused on general contracting activities in order to help rebuild the country after the war. In the 1960s, it began to diversify its activities in civil engineering and infrastructure by contributing to the construction of the metro and numerous tunnels in Brussels. It was at this time that Nicolo, son of Romano, created SOCATRA with the help of his wife, Adriana, in 1967.
At the end of the 1980s, Nicolo expanded its activities and delved into real estate development.
In the late 2000s, his descendants Claudia and Alexandre took up the flame by focusing on the challenges of the 21st century: exemplary buildings, circular economy, sustainable development and the restoration of historic architecture.
SOCATRA’s development was profoundly marked by each era making up the 20th century. From Romano through Nicolo to Alexandre and Claudia, 3 generations of the De Cesco family have led the company to the level of excellence it knows today.
Its development and growth for over 50 years are the result of the company’s values and its efficient and adaptive management.Though it already operated a private renovation and restoration activity, SOCATRA expanded its expertise by integrating the COLEN company, located in Jodoigne, in 2021.
